The sunsets on the Goose Pond Loop are very well-known in the Lowcountry for their warm, moody displays of color against the landscape. The main entrance to the refuge closes at 4pm, so you must park outside the gate and hike to the Goose Pond Loop. Be certain to plan your hike as the park hours are extended for pedestrian traffic until sunset.

Be mindful that you are visiting the homes of bears, coyotes, alligators, bobcats and avians to name a few. While these animals tend to be shy, always practice caution when hiking on the refuge. Stay on the paths and trails for your protection and that of the wildlife you are observing. There are several blinds set up throughout the refuge, including one near the Cross Dike where the above photograph was taken.

Wildlife is on the move throughout the day. Towards dusk, deer, waterfowl and alligators frequent the Cross Dike and the surrounding bodies of water on the Goose Pond Loop. If you elect to take pictures during the Golden Hour, be aware of your surroundings and NWR rules that close the refuge at sunset.

Here are a few hiking tips:

  • Hike the area before sunset taking into consideration the distance from the location(s) where you plan to take pictures and the main gate.

  • Pay attention to the animal tracks in those areas so you are aware of the animals that frequent those areas.

  • Wear durable shoes. While the paths are for the most part well-maintained, there are rough areas that are not suitable for light-weight sneakers or tennis shoes.

  • Pack snacks but "leave no trace". Take all trash with you. If caught littering, you are subject to a minimum $200 fine posted at the main gate.

The photographs above were taken on different days at different locations on the Cross Dike and the Loop. Be prepared to be called to make another trip to the ACE Basin NWR. The scenery is amazing and avian encounters are prolific. So come for memory-making Golden Hour and sunset scenes but be prepared to return to experience all the wonders the ACE Basin NWR offers.
