Sunsets capture our attention, inviting us to pause and appreciate the serene beauty of nature. On Port Royal Sound, this daily event transforms the sky and water into an amazing display of autumn colors that shift with breathtaking intensity. The experience of watching a sunset on the Sound connects you to the rhythms of nature and presents you a rare gift of the Sea Islands.

Port Royal Sound is located in the Sea Islands region of South Carolina between Hilton Head and Port Royal Island. The Atlantic Ocean feeds a network of tidal rivers, marshes, and small islands. The varying geography of the region lends to the amazing displays of color. The clear waters easily mirror the dramatic nightly displays of the evening sky. The marsh grasses, Cypress trees and Oak trees that call the region home add unique nuances of texture and depth giving each sunset a unique experience.

Given the location, sunsets on the Sound often include significant cloud formations. As the sun dips below the horizon, it lights up the clouds with shades of gold, pink, purple and red. These colors change too quickly, but for a short time offer a beautiful light show.

Several Nice Sunset Viewing Locations
Finding the perfect spot to watch the sunset on Port Royal Sound can be difficult, not because there are too few places, but rather too many options.
Beaufort Waterfront Park is typically one of the first places that people choose; however, the area is very crowded, and the walk can be intense, due to parking and traffic. However, if you have braved those, you can enjoy a scenic walk along the shore or grab dinner al fresco at one of the many restaurants that occupy the area.
For quieter moments, I recommend Brewer Memorial Park or Robert Pickney Park.
Brewer Memorial Park abuts Whitehall Boat Landing with its spacious parking area. The walk is a leisurely stroll with picnic tables dotting the way to the fishing pier and dock (non-mooring) where the sunset views are quieter, but richer in the prevalence of aquatic birds following fishing boats to shore.

Fishing-Observation Pier and Dock at Brewer Memorial Park Beaufort, South Carolina Robert Pickney Park abuts Pigeon Point Boat Landing with its ample parking. This location sits on the Point and is much quieter and secluded. The observation area at the park extends into the marsh and affords a view of the sunset through marsh grasses and trees. There is substantial seating in the observation area and the park proper. Dolphins are known to frequent this area, so please be mindful of the laws protecting them when observing.

Grays Hill Boat Landing affords a very quiet view of the sunset. I enjoy sitting on the dock watching the sun set. Crows are quite prevalent, but not problematic. Whether from the dock or your vehicle in the parking area, the scenes are simply stunning.

Walkers and fisherman alike enjoy use of the pier. Dolphins are easily observed and respected from a distance. Seagulls, Osprey, Herons and Egrets are prevalent, due to the large marsh next to the pier and landing.

Planning Your Visit Ahead of Sunset
To make the most of a sunset visit to Port Royal Sound, I suggest the following:
Check the sunset time and arrive early enough to enjoy the view.
Make sure your camera and/or phone is charged. You will definitely want to snap a few pictures.
Dress in layers. The temperatures drop quickly and weather often changes quickly.
Make sure you have a chair or blanket for seating, if you elect not to sit in your vehicle.
Pack snacks and drinks, especially if you plan to stay for a while. Hangry is never a good feeling.
Respect the natural environment making sure you "leave no trace" and carry out all trash.
By planning your trip ahead, you can enjoy a relaxed and memorable sunset.
